CBAI Salutes Time Magazine

My Fellow Shareholders:

It is nice once in a while to just remind ourselves why the stem cell industry is growing, dynamic, and dare I say “a medical revolution.”

We at Cord Blood America would like to tip our hats to TIME magazine for the special story in its March 28, 2011 issue on “How Stem Cells Are Changing the Way We Think About Disease.”

The article reads “It’s only a matter of time before (scientists) figure out how to turn these cells into nerves, heart cells, liver cells or any other living tissue we may need if we get sick or injured.” Just this morning I read an article about a human kidney being created from amniotic fluid and animal fetal cells.

Although this technology is still evolving and we may be several years away from using lab created tissues as organ replacements, if we are able to provide lab created organs one day we may reduce or eliminate the need for thousands of donors waiting on transplant lists or the use of immunosuppressant drugs could be eliminated altogether if the organ is made from the patient’s own stem cells.

Articles such as these bring the field of stem cell research into much needed light. Stem cell research is a relatively new realm and many are unaware of the benefits of stem cells or associate those two words with the controversial “embryonic stem cells”. There are currently more than 70 diseases treated by stem cells and many clinical trials are currently underway for diseases such as cerebral palsy, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s.
